Phoenix Weaponry 1919 A4 Machine Gun

Phoenix Weaponry NFA Project - 1919 A4 .30 Cal

Designed by John Browning as an air-cooled version of his 1917 water-cooled, 30-06, belt-fed, medium machine gun.

It was used during WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War by the U.S. along with other countries. Present-day most 1919’s that are being used have been converted to use 7.62 NATO rounds.

The belts started as cloth and later moved to the M1 link making it a disintegrating belt. It fires from a closed bolt as opposed to the standard open bolt of other machine guns. During sustained fire, operators encounter ‘cook-offs’ where rounds will go off without pulling the trigger, so controlled bursts are best. Variations were produced for crew-served, coaxial, mounted, aircraft, and anti-aircraft from A1 to A6, T66, .30AN/M2, 303 Mark II, and M37. The 1919 A4 is considered to be the little brother to the iconic M2 50 cal.

  • Many 1919 A4 projects that Phoenix Weaponry completes start life as an Israeli re-imported 1919 that they converted to 7.62 NATO.
  • Phoenix Weaponry machined new side plates, re-riveted the side plates back together, re-manufactured many of the small parts and components that were missing.
  • Phoenix Weaponry also re-barrels them and re-chambers them back to the original .30-06 cartridge. From there, the 1919 is assembled and function tested.
